A new high-speed mobile net – 4G – Debuts in Sweden!

December 15th, 2009 by admin. Tags: , , ,

modemToday, the 15th of December, TeliaSonera launched the new 4G mobile net, for private customers in Stockholm and in Oslo.

But only a very limited amount of people will be able to use this from the start.  The new mobile net, where the new technology goes by the name of 4G, is built on a technology by the name LTE (Long Term Evolution). Several of the world’s largest telecom companies have participated in developing this technology.

If you want to use the 4G net, you will need a modem that connects you.

So far, Samsung is one of few companies that have produced the new LTE-modems. And they have only made a few. This modem only works in the 4G-net, and the net is at the moment only covering Stockholm city and the central parts of Oslo.

Kenneth Karlberg, CEO at TeliaSoneras mobile department says to Aftonbladet;

– The usage of mobile data explodes in all of Norden. To manage that we will need better capacity and higher speeds.

Theoretically it will be possible to download data at a speed of 100 Mbit/s with 4G. But in reality the speed will be a bit lower. According to TeliaSonera the maximum speed at the startup period will be 50 Mbit/s. But they promise that the 4G net in short will have the capacity of 20-80 Mbit/s. But TeliaSonera means that it’s  about ten times faster than the existing mobile net, and when the technology were demonstrated yesterday, the speed was around 20 Mbit/s.

TeliaSonera also writes: “Only four years ago, no one had heard of YouTube. You watched TV instead of updating your Facebook and bloggers where an as new term then as 4G is today. Now it’s no longer about “internet habits”, we are actually living a big part of our lives on the internet. “

During 2010 the 4G net will expand in highly populated areas and bigger cities in Sweden, starting with Gothenburg and Malmö.
