MorningDew Media working with Canadian Mind Juice

audio_production-1MORNINGDEW MEDIA is a company working mainly with music and sound effects. Some of the clients include: Ice Game Studios,  Thomson Media Interactive, Digital Art Media (India), Mind Juice (Canada)

It all began when Mattias Holmgren, the founder of Morningdew Media started co-working with a Canadian company called Evillusion (the game Eon of Tears) back in 2002. He produced music, sound effects and also did implementation of the audio content for a game trailer which was later shown on game conventions like E3 in Los Angeles. Later in 2003 he did music cues and sound design for a PS2 title called Shadow of Pandora which was developed by Bitmonks (Denmark).

The latest release is CHARMED, a game for iPhone and iPod touch that you can find in the  iTunes store. Mattias had earlier contacted Mind Juice (which is the developer of Charmed) and when the need came for sound effects, Mind Juice got in touch with Mattias with the specifications for the audio content.

Working with sound for games is not the same as doing it for a movie. Initially you get a design document, or a similar document which explains the overall game. It also includes a list with game-events and their respective sound effect description, for example:

Event: Game freeze, Sound description: A cold sound which should reflect the game freeze state. Length: 1-2 sec. Loopable: false.

Event: GameOver, Sound description: A sad music/sound cue, the player is now dead, finito. Length: 1 minute. Loopable: true.

When Mattias is done with the sounds he sends the sound-batch to the developer who implements the sounds into the game. For upcoming projects Mind Juice are considering the possibility of creating/using a more dynamic engine for music playback, so that the music can follow events in the game in a more precise way. Mattias have already experience in working with such dynamics since the PC game LEGIO, developed by Ice Game Studios. Legio features a event-based music playback system. He also did dynamic mixable music for the game project Rightous Battles (RIP), developed by Todix Labs in 2005.
